Want help with your search?

Here are some resources to

help you land the perfect job.

Match

your SpotLite to the job description

When you apply for a job via an online application process, it’s likely that your background will first be screened by an applicant tracking system, and only those that make it past the first cut are reviewed by a hiring manager. Study the job description and any available information you have on the position and mirror the words and phrases in the job description. Showcase your strengths in the areas that seem to be paramount to the job.

Interviews

are for the employer

Remember that the interviewer cares more about what you can do for them than what you want out of the deal. Certainly, they’re going to care a bunch about what you want once you establish your worth. But during the interview, you must demonstrate why you make business sense to hire.

Maximize

your social media profile

Your social media profile may look great, but if it doesn’t position you as a direct match for a particular role that you’re gunning for, it probably won’t get you in the door. Don’t be afraid to modify wording, switch around key terms, and swap bullet points. Treat it as a living, breathing document throughout your job search (and career). Get recommendations from clients, co-workers and former bosses. And remember to link your SpotLite account to it so potential employers can view your cover video.

Cold-calling

is an option

If you have identified an organization that you believe offers the ideal work and environment but they do not have a position posted, you can use SpotLite’s General Inquiry option to send your SpotLite video requesting a call or video interview to learn more about the company and introduce yourself for future consideration. Many businesses will make “opportunity hires” when they meet a great person and know they will have a need, but don’t have an open position quite yet.

Don't

be boring

Yes, you must come across as polished, articulate, and professional, but don’t be boring. Few people get hired because they had perfect white space on their cover letters, memorized all the “correct” interview questions or used common phraseology (i.e., clichés) throughout their resumes. All this correctness makes you look staged and non-genuine. Instead, give yourself permission to be both polished and endearing. This is where a SpotLite video comes in handy - use it to personalize your profile and showcase your unique skills and personality. Memorable, likable candidates are almost always the ones who go the distance.

Thank you

matters

Send a thoughtful, non-robotic thank you note to each person with whom you interviewed the moment you get back to a computer following the interview. The speed with which you send the notes and the quality will make an impact. If you’re using SpotLite’s mobile app, you can send thank you emails immediately from your mobile device; but take extra care with your typing to avoid typos and “auto-correct” snafus.
